Martyn leads century charge

Source: DeHavilland - July 16, 2005

Australia took control in the second day of their Tour match with Leicestershire after racking up a total of 582-7 in reply to Leicestershire’s 217.

Damien Martyn lead the way, cruising to an unbeaten 154, as a total of three Aussie batsmen made centuries in the match at Grace Road.

Captain Ricky Ponting raced to 119 and opener Justin Langer made 115 in his first competitive game for three months, while Jason Gillespie added 49 not out.

Langer had been absent from the one-day leg of the tour, but put in a fine display just ahead of the Ashes as he put together an innings that included 15 fours.

However, the opener’s day finally came to an end when he was caught off John Maunders.

Ponting, who put his early-tour woes behind him with a one-day century at Lord's earlier in the week, continued that good form as he put together a 201 run partnership with Martyn before being bowled by Ottis Gibson.

Simon Katich soon followed after being bowled by David Masters for just four, but Martyn continued to add to the run count as he sped to his 43rd first-class century.

Stuart Broad did his best to bring the home side back into the game, bowling Adam Gilchrist and Brett Lee in quick succession.

However, Martyn and Gillespie kept the score ticking over as they posted an unbroken 73-run partnership to keep Australia firmly in the driving seat going into the final day.
